We're All Social Workers

As a writer who writes a great deal about business, I often talk about how important it is for people attending college to take psychology, sociology, or social work classes. In my experience taking college business classes I noticed that there isn't any curriculum for customer service. I did learn a little bit about interpersonal communication in one class, but that's the extent of my lessons in building relationships.

No matter what we're doing in life, we all need the skills to communicate effectively with each other. If you really think about it, we're all doing social work, right? Psychology is part of all our lives - whether it's relating to ourselves or each other, talking to our co-workers, or volunteering. Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King, Ghandi...They were all social workers!

What are you doing today to build the skills so you can be a better person or be a better communicator?

The "seven social sins":
Knowledge without character
Science without humanity
Wealth without work
Commerce without morality
Politics without principles
Pleasure without conscience
Worship without self-sacrifice
- Mahatma Gandhi
