The Happiness Series: Step #9 - Replace Fear With Love

Back in April I started the 10 Steps to Happiness Series that is based on one of Deepak Chopra's talks that I saw on PBS. For new readers, here are the past posts in this series:

1. Be aware of your body
2. Be in the present moment
3. Embrace silence through meditation
4. Relinquish the need for external approval
5. Get rid of negative emotions
6. Have total knowledge of yourself
7. Don't judge yourself and others
8. Remove toxins from your body and your environments

Now we arrive at Step #9...Replace fear with love

Deepak Chopra says:
Replace fear-motivated behavior with love-motivated behavior. Fear is the product of memory, which dwells in the past. Remembering what hurt us before, we direct our energies toward making certain that an old hurt will not repeat itself. But trying to impose the past on the present will never wipe out the threat of being hurt. That happens only when you find the security of your own being, which is love. Motivated by the truth inside you, you can face any threat because your inner strength is invulnerable to fear.
When you come from a place of fear, you're not living in the present moment. You're thinking that something may happen which means that you're fearing a circumstance or situation that hasn't even occurred yet. You could be basing your fear on something that happened in the past, like Chopra said, but who's to say that this time around it would be different?

We see this often in people who have been hurt by a loved one or significant other and don't want to become involved in other relationships because of the fear of being hurt again.

When you come from a place of love, you know and trust that everything is going to be ok. You begin to believe that whatever happens is for the higher good of everyone involved.

Here is another perspective of replacing fear with love that I came across at another blog, The Beginning of Motherhood.

Hi Maria.
Good post indeed. Whenever I get stuck with what I am doing or if I ever have an off day I can always trace it to the fear factor, even if I am not consciously aware of what I am fearing.
In fact I write about fear & love quite often in my music.

One song I wrote that springs to mind is 'Loosen Your grip'
Thanks for the words.
