Today I woke up and walked across the street to Starbucks because I was craving one of their Flat White coffees, but instead of going back straight to my apartment to start work, I decided to hang out on the bench by the water fountain in front of my apartment building to enjoy the sound of the trickling water and take in the warmth of the day. Yes, it still feels like summer here in San Diego!
As I sat there just relaxing, I realized that in the five months that I’ve lived here, I hadn’t taken the time to just enjoy my surroundings. Between moving and getting settled in, I’ve had more work and responsibilities to take care of. Sure, I take time out here and there, but I’m still out and about entertaining guests from out of town, having a date with Cory, or enjoying lunch with a friend. I haven’t really taken the time time to just sit and truly enjoy the moment.
So today I took my own advice and did something new, which was to sit by the water fountain and just relax.
I thought about how long it’s been since I’ve written a blog post. For that, I apologize. In the spirit of shaking things up and getting out of my rut, I thought I was due for some inspired writing and to get back to what I believe is my purpose here.
I guess you could say I got sucked back into that rat race of working and wanting more. I had manifested a bigger place, an increase in income, and my mind kept thinking of wanting more, which in of itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it came at the expense of my health. This weekend I came down with the flu, which forced me to slow down and just rest. I still haven’t fully recovered, but it really is hard for me to do just lay around and do nothing. And that’s probably why I got sick in the first place.
Through all of this I was reminded of one of the easiest ways to a happy life…
Do something new each day.
Sitting there by the water fountain this morning for the first time, I enjoyed watching the bees gather around the water and the sun’s rays peeking through the trees. I sipped on my Flat White and felt gratitude that I now actually live right across the street from a Starbucks.
Awhile back I started a challenge with a couple friends to do something new each day for a year and document it on a blog that we called Our Firsts For a Year. We were inspired by Luann Cahn’s book, I Dare Me: How I Rebooted and Recharged My Life by Doing Something New Every Day. Unfortunately, I fell off and didn’t continue keeping up with the blog posts.
When you do something new each day, you don’t get caught in a rut. You tend to enjoy each moment and just simply feel happier and more alive. Time just seems to fade away and you get lost in the now.
I challenge you to try something new every day for a week and see how it changes your perspective on life. You don’t have to do anything major. Maybe you try a different route to work, try a new restaurant, or simply discover a new website.
I’d love to hear about your experiences! Share them via comments below...
